The
mission of the State PIRG Alumni Network is to provide services to help
alumni of Public Interest Network organizations continue to make a
difference.
Over
the last 40 years, the Public Interest Network organizations have served as the training ground
for countless young activists and organizers. Now, alumni
of state PIRGs and
affiliated Public Interest Network organizations are everywhere: leading the nation's environmental,
consumer, political
reform, and social justice organizations; distinguishing themselves in
government service; and working with the media, foundations,
universities,
the private sector, and in countless other professions. We celebrate
the role of our alumni in the Public Interest Network organizations and
in the greater
social
change movement.

Public Interest Network & SPAN updates:
Huge Victory on Mercury Pollution:
On
Dec. 21, the Obama administration required coal-fired power plants to
reduce their mercury pollution by 90 percent, a decision expected to
save 11,000 lives a year. The administration's decision was made easier
not only by the grassroots support that Environment America and its
state affiliates helped organize, but also by the state limits on
mercury emissions state affiliates helped win in Massachusetts,
Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Maine, Maryland and Illinois. Read more here.

U.S. PIRG Calls on Congress to Stop Subsidizing Obesity:
Amid concern over reducing the federal debt and deficit, U.S. PIRG
and the state PIRGs have been shining a light on the link between
billion-dollar government subsidies for corn, soybeans and other junk
food ingredients and the rise in childhood obesity. This effort got a
nationwide boost on Dec. 27, as the CBS Early Show featured the PIRG
report, "Apples to Twinkies," and interviewed PIRG's Mike Russo on the
issue. Check it out here.

Report Urges New Fracking Safeguards:
A
U.S. Department of Energy subcommittee recommends new steps to reduce
threats to our land, water and air posed by hydraulic fracturing, or
fracking, for natural gas. Environment America's John Rumpler urged the
Obama administration to go further, by removing all exemptions won by
oil and gas drillers to environmental laws, and by keeping our forests,
parks and drinking water sources off-limits to fracking. More details here.

Environment California: Huntington Beach Bans the Bag
Huntington
Beach is the latest local government to ban throwaway plastic bags, a
top priority of Environment California this summer. Before the vote,
half a dozen residents spoke in favor of the ban. Among them,
13-year-old Aimee Borgmeyer, who wore a suit made of plastic bags. Read
