Associate Deputy Executive Director of Campaign Strategies and Actions

Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide human rights movement of more than 1.8 million members and supporters in over 150 countries. AI’s vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.  Our mission is to undertake research, education, and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination.  

 

Founded in 1965, Amnesty International of the USA (AIUSA) is the largest AI section, with 360,000 members, almost half a million on-line activists, more than a thousand community and student activist groups, and a $43 million budget.  No other human rights organization in the United States has the international scope and grassroots membership of AIUSA, and central to achieving our mission is our ability to effectively mobilize activists in coordinated campaigns and actions.  Current campaigns include Stop Violence Against Women and The America I Believe In, which seeks to close Guantanamo Bay and end torture and unfair trials; current actions include calls for the release of prisoners of conscience in Syria, Ethiopia, and Sri Lanka. The Associate Deputy Executive Director (Associate DED) is an important new position for AIUSA that will have responsibility for developing dynamic strategies to promote our major campaigns and actions.  In addition to directly supervising staff responsible for campaigns and actions, the Associate DED will lead strategy development and implementation throughout the organization, ensuring that all key staff and volunteer leaders are properly consulted and engaged. This position will work closely with these partners: AIUSA’s thematic programs such as Business and Human Rights and Program to Abolish the Death Penalty, country specialists, and the Government Relations unit; our 5 regional offices on developing local organizing strategies, educational outreach, distribution mechanisms, and trainings; the Communications Department to devise media and web strategies; the Development Department to seek funding for AIUSA’s work and integrate resource development into Campaigns; and, other organizations, such as advocacy and human rights groups, faith communities, professional associations, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of seven years of solid campaign organizing experience and proven supervisory and management skills. Other requirements include: proven track record in organizing and managing diverse teams and leading successful national advocacy campaigns; demonstrated knowledge of and ability to devise creative, effective approaches to raising public awareness and engaging current and new activists; experience working in coalitions to develop advocacy strategies; history of working well with activists; superior public speaking and interpersonal relations abilities; excellent writing, organizational, and analytical skills; ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative and consultative environment and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of varied backgrounds, skills and abilities; capacity to motivate and inspire colleagues and activists; strong management, coaching, and mentoring skills. High energy and a sense of humor are important. Experience with engaging and organizing economically and ethnically diverse communities a plus.
