About the JOBS Project

As our nation transitions to a clean energy economy, Appalachian coalfield communities are in danger of being left behind.  The JOBS Project is the only organization in the region dedicated to local ownership of renewable energy resources in order to retain the majority of economic benefits within communities.  We implement locally-owned renewable energy pilot projects, including commercial-scale projects, and work with schools to train students and professionals for careers in the renewable energy industry.  Our projects are informed by the triple bottom line of sustainability, taking into account ecological, economic, and social impacts.  Bringing together diverse strategic parters from the public, private, and non-profit sectors is an essential element of our work.

 

Summary of Position: 

The JOBS Project is an emerging organization, and we are seeking an entrepreneurial individual to continue to establish our organizational foundations.  This position has potential to grow into a leadership role at the forefront of renewable energy-based job creation and economic development in the heart of the Appalachian coalfields. 

 

Primary responsibilities include developing and executing a fundraising plan for the organization's daily operations and organizing educational and fundraising events.  The Coordinator also advises and works closely with the Director regarding organizational structure and accountability. 

 

General Duties and Responsibilities:

Organizational Development

·         Serve as Board Liaison, including coordinating meetings and disseminating information to Board members

·         Propose specific protocol to Executive Director in order to stimulate organizational transparency and efficient staff management

·         Participate in strategic planning

·         Complete already-initiated 501(c)(3) application process to establish tax-exempt status

 

Fundraising

·         Work with Executive Director and Board to plan, diversify, and secure operational funding

·         Identify grant opportunities and write grant proposals

·         Strategize and execute individual donor plan, maintain contributor relationships

·         Maintain organizational budget

·         Raise funds through special events

 

Communications

·         Plan and execute annual educational community events, including but not limited to Energy Independence Day and semi-annual tours of renewable energy facilities.  Includes recruiting and supervising volunteers.

·         Supervise interns working on publicity, event coordination, etc.

·         Publish quarterly newsletter to engage contributors in efforts to bring renewable energy to coalfield communities

·         Update publicity materials such as brochures or display boards

·         Ensure that the JOBS Project is represented at relevant conferences

 

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a sincere commitment to ensuring that the coalfield communities of Central Appalachia undergo a just transition to a clean energy economy.  We are looking for someone to participate in developing and actualizing a long-term vision for the organization.  Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to give and receive constructive criticism are essential in the collaborative work environment of the JOBS Project.  Excellent writing skills and ability to communicate with diverse parties are a must.  A bachelor's degree is required.  Individuals who are from, or currently live in the coalfields are strongly encouraged to apply.  Additional background required:

·         Understanding of and commitment to the benefits of renewable energy

·         Fundraising, canvassing and/or grant writing

·         Strategy analysis, development & implementation

·         Experience preparing publicity materials such as brochures, newsletters, etc.

Additional background preferred:

·         Community organizing

·         Event coordination

·         Staff or volunteer management

·         Understanding of institutional development theory

Compensation

This is a contract position for June-October, 2010, with intention to extend employment contingent on available funds.  Several opportunities for long-term funding are available and the ideal candidate will be motivated to raise funds to maintain her or his permanent staff position.  A stipend of $3,000 plus mileage and housing in Williamson, WV, is available for the duration of the position, with strong possibility of bonuses or promotion to full-time staff based on performance and as funds become available.
