SAFER Strategic Communications Manager
The State Alliance for Federal Reform of Chemicals Policy (SAFER) is
a strategic campaign whose long-term vision is to establish a new precautionary
federal chemicals policy that is the basis of a clean, green economy by 2020.
The key strategy of this state-based campaign is to win comprehensive chemical
policy reform measures in key states to tip the balance for achieving reform at
the federal level. SAFER is composed of coalitions in eight states including
California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York,
and Washington.
SAFER is looking to build its strategic communications
capacity. We are seeking an experienced communications professional, preferably
with experience in a campaign context as well as experience as a journalist.
Successful candidates will be able to frame and pitch stories to top level
national television and print media, as well as work with diverse campaigns to
devise media and messaging strategies that will build momentum for state and
national policy reform. Established relationships with national reporters a
definite plus. This job will require aggressive placement of stories and a
motivated self-starter who can increase coverage and attention to the important
chemical policy debate.
Job Responsibilities
Develop and implement
strategic communications plan
* Lead a collaborative effort
to develop and implement a SAFER strategic communications plan
*
Link to market-based campaigns (e.g. cosmetics) and identify messaging
and media outreach opportunities to ensure consistency and maximum
impact.
* Identify consistent top line problem and
solution messages that reinforce each other across states and with other
campaigns.
Build visibility of and support for state efforts
*
Collect and package tangible examples and stories that help make the
case.
* Create a web-based resource for
reporters.
* Help states take advantage of media
opportunities and create tools that can be tailored to locations and
constituencies.
* Create a media
calendar.
* Evaluate and pursue effective new media
outreach opportunities (e.g. internet).
* Secure TV and
radio stories.
* Provide strategic messaging
assistance.
* Provide strategic feedback to help shape
and promote resources such as DVD's.
* Support development of
common materials and tools.
Place national chemical policy
stories
* Draw together the best state and regional
policy stories and market campaign successes into trend stories about the
momentum building toward chemical policy reform.
* Pitch
stories to national parenting magazines and other national outlets (e.g. New
Yorker)
* Build relationships with national
writers.
Reports to: National Campaign Manager
Position: At least
part time but flexible
Location: Prefer Pacific Northwest but
flexible
Pay: Commensurate with experience, includes paid vacation,
health care and dental coverage, contributions to a retirement plan and
tax-deferred savings through a 403 (b) plan.
