Progressive Voter Network Field Organizer Job Description

Background
The November 2006 midterm election was an exciting step forward for progressives, but much work remains. The new Congress, on its own, will not resolve our nation’s most pressing concerns.  If we want to combat global warming, increase access to higher education, provide healthcare for all Americans, end corruption in Washington, and redeploy our troops, we must maintain control of Congress and take back the White House.  To do so, we must continue to develop our networks of volunteers and organizers to ensure that the new Congress will bring forth the changes they have promised, and to lay the foundation for a winning, neighbor-to-neighbor, precinct-based get-out-the-vote operation in 2008.

The Progressive Voter Network is hiring field organizers to build local networks of concerned volunteers and voters in targeted Congressional districts in presidential swing states.   The volunteers in each network will hone their skills between elections by working on progressive issue campaigns. These networks of seasoned volunteers will be the leaders in an effective voter drive to take back the White House.

Job Description
Field Organizers will work in multiple congressional districts each to recruit, train and manage networks of volunteers.  Specifically, field organizers will:
• Recruit volunteers through phone calls, emails, individual interactions and community events.
• Train volunteers in key organizing skills, including organizing a district meeting with their member of congress, holding a press conference in their district or generating grassroots support on a particular issue.
• Manage and mobilize volunteers by meeting weekly with lead volunteers to plan upcoming campaign tactics in their district, ongoing volunteer recruitment and training.

Location
We are currently hiring field organizers in AR, AZ, CO, FL, IA, OR, ME, MI, MN, MO, NM, NC, NH, NV, OH, PA, TN, VA, WA, WV and WI.

Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have the desire, skills and toughness to lay the foundation for volunteer-driven networks of activists in targeted congressional districts in presidential swing states.  Candidates must be goal-oriented with leadership skills, organizing experience, and a strong commitment to change politics as usual in Washington DC. Candidates need to be strategic, independent, able to recruit, train and motivate a wide range of people, and be able to tell a compelling story. Positions are through the November 2008 election.
