Field Associate

VPIRG is looking for a mission-driven grassroots organizer with strong communications and project management skills to
join our efforts to help educate and mobilize Vermonters to defend the public interest. The Field Associate will work under
the guidance of the Field and Communications Director to grow VPIRG’s grassroots activist base and motivate Vermont
citizens and leaders through innovative, inspiring, action-oriented communications. This position offers a unique
opportunity for professional development and growth as you work on cutting edge issues affecting Vermont and the
nation.

About VPIRG: VPIRG’s mission is to promote the health and wellbeing of Vermont’s people and environment by
informing and mobilizing citizens across the state. For more than 30 years we have represented the public’s voice,
countering special interest influence, on issues of public health, the environment, consumer protection and democracy.
VPIRG’s work has helped keep Vermont on the cutting edge of critical national issues ranging from global warming to
affordable health care. In each case, we identify innovative solutions and build the political support necessary to put
practical ideas into action. We hold government and business leaders accountable by acting as a watchdog and using the
courts and administrative processes for enforcement actions when necessary. The organization has eight fulltime
staff and a summer field staff of 30. Our annual budget is approximately $800,000. You can find more information about

Job Summary: The Field Associate will help to lead VPIRG’s grassroots organizing work by educating the public about
our campaigns and mobilizing our members, coalition partners and activists to join in the fight for the public interest. Major
elements of the position include:

· Field Organizing: Create and sustain partnerships with allied organizations. Conduct research and political
analysis of grassroots organizing opportunities to inform campaign efforts. Build VPIRG’s grassroots base of
support and work to turn knowledge into action by training activists to take part in campaign tactics.

· Public Outreach: Work with the Field Director to support door-to-door and phone canvass operations. Utilize
VPIRG’s email action network to foster increased public action on key issues. Organize and facilitate public
events to raise awareness and garner support for campaigns.

· Campaign Communications: Work with our team of organizers and advocates to create strategic
communications tools that explain our campaign issues in new and exciting ways using all available media. This
will involve extensive use of the web, electronic organizing, graphic design, and publications, as well as active
engagement of state and local media.

· Fundraising and Administrative: A critical component of field work is to ‘pay as you go’, or assist in fundraising
for your own position and the organization as a whole. To this end the Associate will participate in various aspects
of fundraising including grants, citizen outreach, events, and major donor campaigns.

Qualifications: At least 2 years of experience in activist-oriented communications and political organizing. Proven
experience in training and developing activists on a political or social change campaign. Experience working with the
media and strong writing and public speaking skills. Experience with all levels of grassroots political campaigns including
recruitment, training, messaging and direct negotiation with leaders. Experience with project management with a keen
attention to detail. Familiarity with website and desktop publishing, graphics design and online organizing strategies.
Fundraising experience a plus. Candidates must be able to travel (within state) and work evening/weekend hours as
necessary. Commitment to the issues on which VPIRG works and a mission-driven approach are essential in this
demanding and highly professional work environment.

Compensation: Competitive salary depending on experience. VPIRG offers an excellent benefits package including
employer-paid health insurance, employer matching IRA contributions of up to 3% of salary, 4 weeks paid vacation plus
personal days.
