Remember, if you have been denied credit, you are entitled to a free credit report. If you are a victim of fraud, be sure to ask the credit bureaus for free copies. They will often provide them. Starting October 1997, free annual credit reports for victims of identity theft, indigent persons and unemployed persons are required by federal law. Six states (CO, GA, MA, MD, NJ, and VT) provide a free credit report annually on request to anyone, from each of the Big 3 bureaus.

As noted above, the national credit bureaus offer a toll-free number that enables consumers to opt-out of all pre-approved credit offers with just one phone call. Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688) for more information.
