“ We’ll push ahead to develop... the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.”

-White House Press Spokesperson, Ari Fleischer

The Attack On Our Public Lands

Logging, Mining & Road Building In Our National Forests: A new Forest Service policy should protect 58.5 million acres of pristine national forests, but the timber industry and their allies in the Bush administration and Congress are working to overturn the policy even though more than 50 percent of national forests have been developed or destroyed.

Drilling In The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: The pristine Arctic Refuge is now off-limits to oil and gas drilling. Unfortunately, oil companies led by BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron and Phillips, along with their allies in Congress and President Bush, want to drill in the Refuge despite the fact there may be only six months worth of oil that could take as long as 10 years to reach U.S. consumers.

Shrinking & Destroying Our National Monuments: Recently designated national monuments protect some of our country’s natural treasures. Unfortunately, Interior Secretary Norton may shrink their boundaries and open them to oil and gas drilling, mining and off-road vehicles.

Our Public Lands Are A Vital Part Of Our Natural Heritage

Our public lands provide:

• habitat for endangered species,
• clean drinking water for communities across the country,
• endless opportunities for recreation and solitude.

We must treat these lands as our natural heritage to be passed on to future generations.

"I do see a new optimistic attitude in our industry."
-Timber Industry Spokesperson, Chris West February 18, 2001
