State PIRG Reports:

Consider The Source
Hundreds of thousands of women are at risk of having pregnancies end in miscarriage or having children with birth defects because of chemical byproducts that occur in drinking water as a result of chlorination, according to this report

Poisoning Our Water Report: Map of State-by-State Pollution
Nearly 30% of the nation's largest industrial, municipal, and federal facilities were in serious violation of the Clean Water Act at least once during a recent 15-month period. Poisoning Our Water: How the Government Permits Pollution also documents nearly 270 million pounds of toxic pollution released into U.S. waters in 1997.

Reports By Other Organizations And Institutions:

Polluting our Future: Chemical Pollution in the U.S. that Affects Child Development and Learning
A report written by the National Environmental Trust, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and the Learning Disabilities Association of America shows how the vast amount of toxic chemicals emitted by industry each year are taking a toll on children's environmental health. Over half the chemicals reported to the Toxics Release Inventory are known or suspected developmental or neurological toxins.

CDC's National Exposure Report Card
This report assesses the U.S. population's exposure to toxic substances including metals, pesticides, and other chemicals. It provides information on people's level of exposure to toxic chemicals that may cause diseases like cancer, birth defects, respiratory and cardiac diseases, and other chronic diseases.

America's Environmental Health Gap: Why the Country Needs a Nationwide Health Tracking Network
This report, authored by the Pew Environmental Health Commission, examines our current public health response capabilities to environmental threats. We know pollutants are entering our air and water with suspected or known adverse effects on our health. We are, however, limited in knowing if there is a link between that pollution and the increases we are seeing in chronic diseases because we do not track environmental health factors. (You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this report.)

Blindfolding Public Health in the Fight Against Asthma
Incidence of asthma has skyrocketed over the past twenty years increasing by 75%. Considering the epidemic proportions of this disease, we have very limited knowledge on where and how often asthma strikes, what associations there may be with environmental triggers, and how effectively health care is being delivered to the children and otherse who suffer from this chronic disease.

Transition Report to the New Administration: Strengthening our Public Health Defense Against Environmental Threats
The health of the American people was in the forefront of the Presidential election. The new President and his Administration face multiple challenges as he seeks to address the concerns of the American public. How can this administration stem rising health care costs and assure coverage for all Americans? How are we to control these rising costs when prescription drugs and treatment efforts get ever more expensive?
