We, the undersigned organizations, call for the creation of a Nationwide Health Tracking Network to be housed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as proposed by the Pew Environmental Health Commission. The Nationwide Health Tracking Network would establish a uniform system to track chronic diseases and to monitor environmental exposures relevant to disease. It would provide public health practitioners with the necessary tools to more fully understand the impact of environmental factors on chronic disease and to take steps to prevent its onset. This network can be built on existing public health efforts to track infectious diseases thereby expanding public health capacity at local, state and federal levels. The information from this network will be accessible to communities and can be used by them to protect their health. Finally, this strengthening of our public health defense will ensure that we allocate our resources wisely, based on real needs and aimed at truly protecting the health of our families and children.
