Appropriations Bill***
Call your
Senators and Representatives today and urge them to increase
funding for the Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership
Program (LEAP). The LEAP program encourages states to continue
to expand their own grant programs. States use LEAP funds
to support increased grant aid, early intervention, community
service, and scholarship programs in specialized academic
areas. Currently the LEAP program serves 667,000 students
throughout the country.
The President's
FY 2003 budget proposes to eliminate LEAP. As college costs
rise and the typical student graduates with $16,928 in federal
loan debt it is more important than ever to fully fund programs
such as LEAP that help to ensure access to higher education
for thousands of Americans.
Action:
Call your Senators and Representatives and ask them to support
including $100 million in funding for the LEAP program in
this year's Education budget.
