Background: In his role as field director, Mr. Speight is responsible for building the WISPIRG’s network of active citizens and mobilizing supporters in key state and federal legislative districts throughout the state to win campaigns to protect Wisconsin’s environment and consumers. Recently he has built a coalition of businesses who support an increased investment in energy efficiency and clean, renewable energy in Wisconsin. Additionally, he has run campaigns to protect Wisconsin’s lakes from overdevelopment and to build support among Wisconsin’s congressional delegation for protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling and for increasing average fuel economy standards. Mr. Speight has testified before the Wisconsin state legislature on consumer legislation related to rent-to-own companies. He has also appeared on the local NBC affiliate and in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Wisconsin State Journal and the Green Bay Press Gazette.
Prior to serving as WISPIRG field director, Mr. Speight was the State Field Director for the Wisconsin New Voters Project, which registered 129,000 18-24 year olds to vote and played an important in increasing Wisconsin’s youth voter turnout in the 2004 election. Before moving to Wisconsin, Mr. Speight directed Massachusetts Community Water Watch, a project of MASSPIRG and Americorps that engaged thousands of college students statewide in hands-on service and education projects around local water quality issues.
