Background: Ms. Binns directs statewide energy and air quality campaigns including Environment Florida’s effort to reduce smog, soot, mercury, and carbon dioxide pollution from the oldest and dirtiest power plants and to stop rollback of critical clean air standards. In addition, she advocates in the state legislature and to other decision makers at the state level on Environment Florida’s broader environmental agenda.
She has been featured in the St. Petersburg Times, Miami Herald and The New York Times and has appeared on AP Television News as well as WESH-NBC in Orlando. Ms. Binns has authored several reports, including "Energy Efficient Florida: Smart Energy Policy That Benefits Florida’s Economy and Environment," and testified before the state legislature on power plant regulation and a range of energy issues. Ms. Binns co-chairs the Florida Climate Alliance, has served as legislative chair for the Gold Coast Clean Cities Coalition, and coordinates the Florida Coordinated Environmental Campaign.
Ms. Binns first worked for Florida PIRG as a legislative intern from 1993 to 1995. She then worked in the Georgia Legislature and then for the Florida Consumer Action Network. She returned to Florida PIRG staff in 1999 and became part of the Environment Florida staff in 2006.
