Who's Behind the Attacks
The effort to limit debate on campus is being led by well-funded, political groups from off campus. They are dedicated to forwarding their own political agenda by silencing others. In recent years, they have filed lawsuits and supported legislation that would restrict campus speech. These groups have put their own agendas in front of the marketplace of ideas.
In The Courts
Private foundations, such as the ultra-conservative Alliance Defense Fund, are attempting to overturn the long-standing right of universities to fund a broad range of programs that further their educational mission. Also, it is their hope that the threat of legal action will intimidate campuses into weakening their support for student activities.
In The Legislature
Legislators, often spurred on by pressure from industry and special interest lobby groups, have introduced legislation to limit campus debate. They have tried to reduce campus control over student fees and restrict the kinds of activities that can be funded. |
